Reading

File over app

Steph Ango · July 1, 2023 · stephango.com

File over app is a philosophy: if you want to create digital artifacts that last, they must be files you can control, in formats that are easy to retrieve and read. Use tools that give you this freedom.

Reading profile

Apply a recommended profile, then adjust any setting below. The dyslexia profile uses a clear sans-serif font, wider spacing, left alignment, and a warm light theme.
Manual does nothing automatically. Offer shows the Lens handle on readable pages. Automatic opens high-confidence articles and respects per-site choices.

Site rules

Choose which sites always use Lens or never offer it. Sites without a rule use the setting above.
    No site-specific rules yet.

    Fonts

Add fonts installed on your system. Press enter to add a font.

      Typography

Left-aligned text is recommended. Justification can create uneven gaps between words.

      Theme

      Choose light or dark appearance.
Choose the colors used in reading view.
Use a different color scheme in dark mode.

      Images

Blend images with the page background in reader mode.

      Transcripts

Keep the video player visible while scrolling through the transcript.
Automatically scroll the transcript to follow playback.
Highlight the current sentence in the transcript during playback.

      Advanced

CSS applied automatically in reading view.

      Listen

Read pages aloud in Lens with synchronized highlighting. Uses an enhanced voice when configured, or a voice from your device.

      Enhanced voice

Enter the team access code you received. It is stored only on this device and gives Lens access to Reframe narration. It is not your ElevenLabs key.
Fast is recommended for reading. Premium can sound better for some voices and languages.
Voices load after Lens is connected to Reframe.

      Device voice

Voices provided by your browser or operating system. Voices marked "local" work without an internet connection; others are remote services chosen by your browser.
If the enhanced voice fails, continue automatically with the device voice from the same position.

      Playback

You can also change speed anytime from the player. Narration speed is a personal preference — pick what is comfortable.
How narration is highlighted while listening. Preferences vary — no one mode is right for everyone.
Scroll the page to keep the narrated section visible. Respects your system's reduced-motion preference.

      Privacy

When the enhanced voice is used, Lens sends only the section currently being spoken to the Reframe narration service, which uses ElevenLabs to create the audio. Lens and the gateway do not log page text or audio. Device voices are provided by your browser: voices reported as local are processed on your device, while remote device voices send text to the voice service your browser uses.

      Explain

Use natural language to extract data from pages. For example, you can use the template syntax {{"a summary of the page"}}. Requires an API key or custom model configured below. Learn more.
Run prompt variables immediately if the template contains any. This will consume API credits with your model provider. Turn off if you only want to run Explain manually.

      Providers

By using an external provider you agree to their terms and privacy policy. Explain requests are sent directly to the provider you choose. Reframe does not gather or store any data about your requests.

      Models

      Advanced

Override the context used to process prompt variables. Variables can be used here.

      Save & integrations

      Vaults

By default, clipped notes are saved to the currently open vault. You can add vaults here if you want the option to save to different vaults. Vault names must exactly match the name of the Obsidian vault. Press enter to add a vault.
To import your properties from Obsidian, locate the types.json file in the .obsidian folder within your vault. Note this folder is hidden by default on most operating systems.
Save Lens note properties to a types.json file that can be imported into your Obsidian vault, or into Lens on other devices.
Remove all properties that are not used in any template.

        All properties

        Advanced

Uses the URI clipping method compatible with Obsidian 1.6.7 or earlier. Note that the length of the content you can clip is limited by your browser and OS. Some pages may fail without any errors.
Remove any changes you've made to the default template.
Export all settings including templates and properties.
Import all settings including templates and properties. This will replace your current configuration.
